(This one pulls off the dubious trick of being jokey without being funny. The good news is that Mia Wasikowska is back in the title role, bright-spirited and skillful as ever, but she’s burdened by the manic direction of James Bobin, working from a dramatically inert script by Ms. This carnival of excessive decoration and frenetic behavior comes six years after Disney’s hugely profitable “Alice In Wonderland,” a live-action, visually ornate and dramatically bland production that Tim Burton directed from a script by Linda Woolverton. A better title might be “Alice Through the Funhouse Mirror,” though there’s little fun on the other side. In any case, I took short lines during the movie that stood out to me as impactful, and those, I will reflect upon below.Disney’s “Alice Through the Looking Glass” carries the title it does for obvious reasons that include marketing, a lingering debt to Lewis Carroll and marketing. 'Not you' Tweedledee retorted contemptuously. 'And if he left off dreaming about you, where do you suppose you'd be' 'Where I am now, of course,' said Alice. Is Alice a raving fucking lunatic, coming up with universes of her own accord? Or is this a point that everyone’s own “reality” is subjective to their own experience. Alice said 'Nobody can guess that.' 'Why, about YOU' Tweedledee exclaimed, clapping his hands triumphantly. So, I’m not sure how the audience is supposed to interpret this.
However, when Alice makes a mistake and the passage of time comes to a standstill in Wonderland, you can see it reflected on the other side of the mirror that she entered Wonderland from in the first place, in the “real” world.
This clearly portrays to the audience that Wonderland is a figment of Alice’s imagination. Her mother tells her that she was found babbling and trying to hide under tables. For example, at one point, Alice is in Wonderland, helping her friends, and she is sort of ejected from the universe only to wake up in an insane asylum. Now, I don’t know how literally to take the story line that is laid out for the watchers in this film. In this movie, Alice is racing away from time (who is personified as a man) in an attempt to change the past. I don’t know about anyone else, but I love it when supposed children’s stories tell the more mature watchers a secret message throughout the story. It is the second of the Alice in Wonderland Series, and, although I was already excited to see it, I was significantly pleased with what I actually got out of the story line.
